Bentwood Coat Rack in the style of Thonet Vienna (SOLD)
This superb bentwood wall mounted coat rack is in the style of the famous Thonet Vienna, believed to be made by Thonet, comprising of 4 s shaped hangers and back plate with fittings, this is a beautiful piece of hand made history.
The name “Bentwood” is derived from the fact that the wood on the chair has been bent into position. Using a combination of heat and moisture, the wood becomes soft and flexible enough to bend into different shapes. Once it dries out, the wood becomes hardened and keeps it new shape for many years to come.
There are many different types of wood that can be used, although ash and beech are generally the best because they can bend easily and do not crack like other, harder woods tend to do under the process.
Thonet’s first independent commission in 1849, was the Bentwood Coat Stand for the Cafe Daum in Vienna. A timeless design with classic, quintessential Thonet style. Designed to hold coats, hats and umbrellas.
