A Superb Georgian Oak Dresser Base. Made from English Oak, with three drawers retaining the original brass handles, a beautifully shaped apron above a lower pot shelf. C1820
Dressers first appeared in the mid-17th century, replacing simple storage cupboards. The earliest forms were low dressers or serving tables, often on legs united by stretchers, and the pot board (an under-tier shelf) was added later in the century.
The name “pot board” comes from its original use; the lower shelf was designed to store heavy items like copper pots, butter crocks, mixing bowls, and jugs, keeping them off the floor in a busy farmhouse kitchen or scullery.
This is a stunning piece of English furniture, very solid, with beautiful patina & colour. This would make a lovely addition to any hallway, lounge or kitchen, even as a dresser in the bedroom.
