A Superb Antique leather & wood-bound domed steamer trunk. Leather bound with wood banding, brass corners, locks and copper stud work. C1860.
Antique dome-topped, leather-covered trunks, popular in the 19th century (especially 1860s–1890s), were designed for travel by stagecoach, ship, and early rail. Their curved “camelback” shape was intended to prevent other luggage from being stacked on top, ensuring they remained on top of piles and preventing water accumulation.
They were typically built with wood (often oak), covered in hides (deer, cow), and featured reinforced metal, iron, or brass trim and studs for durability. The dome shape offered strength and prevented stacking during travel.
In the late 19th century, they were largely replaced by flat-topped trunks, which were more practical for stacking in modern steamship cabins and train luggage cars.
This trunk remains in original condition, would make a lovely shop display piece or as a blanket box at the foot of the bed, a truly lovely piece of Victorian Luggage.
