A very large pair of lovely Chinese lidded ginger jar. Two large black ebonies Ginger Jars, a very simple flat black glaze throughout, the lid is topped with a well cast foo dog handle. C1900
A ginger jar featuring a lion motif (such as moulded brass or ceramic lion-head handles, a foo lion / guardian lion lid knob, or hand-painted lion/dragon imagery) typically belongs to the Famille NoireChinese porcelain tradition. Ginger jars originated in ancient China during the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE) as practical, high-shouldered storage containers designed to hold and transport spices, salt, oil, and ginger, built with rounded bodies, wide shoulders, small mouths, and domed lids to keep contents sealed and fresh.
These jars may show signs of some use but remain in original condition, a small chip to one of the jars but this does not take away how lovely these jars are, would make a lovely addition to any home or as a shop display.
