These folding screens originated in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) to block drafts and create privacy. Over time, they became elaborate, often constructed of twelve panels made from lacquered wood, silk, or paper. A significant type, Coromandel lacquer screens, became popular for export during the Ming and Qing dynasties. These featured kuan cai (incised colours) techniques, with intricate carvings filled with colour or mother-of-pearl, named after the Coromandel coast of India, where they were shipped.
This Room Divider is in very good condition, folds flat for easy storage, fully functional, would look great in any home or as a shop display, even as a prop. (Dimensions when closed W: 58cm D: 7cm)
