Antique S.W Silver & Co Teak Campaign Chest

A Superb quality Teak military campaign chest. Made from Teak, the drawers split into two halves, the top section with two short and one long drawer, the bottom section has two large drawers, with the original brass flush fitted handles and brass bound decoration, four cast handles to the sides all raised on the original hand turned feet, it also retains the original makers label to the back, S.W. Silver & Co Out fitters London & Liverpool. C1860

S.W. Silver & Co was a prominent historical outfitting, clothing, and campaign furniture company that operated in London and Liverpool during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The original firm no longer exists as a high street outfitter under that name today.

The company of Stephen Winkworth Silver & Co was founded in June 1823 as general merchants and outfitters. Locations: They had premises in London (originally Bishops gate and later Cornhill) and Liverpool (St. George’s Crescent), as well as branches in other major UK cities by 1900. They supplied clothing, military uniforms, and portable “campaign” furniture (designed for easy transport, often used by military officers and colonists) to travellers, emigrants, and military personnel going to British colonies. 

Campaign furniture was designed to be packed up and carried on the march. It has been used by traveling armies since at least the time of Julius Caesar but it is commonly associated with British Army officers, many of whom had purchased their commissions. With the rise and expansion of the British Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries the demand by the military, administrators and colonists increased. British officers of high social position in the Georgian and Victorian periods (1714–1901) often carried high-quality portable furniture. This piece is in original condition, would make a lovely statement piece in any setting.
