Pair of Regency Mahogany & Oilcloth Chairs

£450.00

A Lovely Pair of Regency Dark Oak Chairs. Made from mahogany with the original oilcloth seat cover. C1830

Antique oilcloth has a rich history as a durable, waterproof covering, evolving from early linseed-oil-coated canvas in the 18th century to a popular, patterned, and protective material for furniture in the early 20th century. It was used as a cost-effective substitute for leather, protecting household furniture from dirt, grease, and wear, particularly during the Victorian and Edwardian eras when hair oils were fashionable.

Originally created by coating canvas with boiled linseed oil, often mixed with pigments like sienna or umber for curing. It was used to protect items from moisture. By the mid-19th century, oilcloth was used as a durable, washable, and flexible covering for furniture, including chair seats and backs. It was considered a practical, inexpensive option for the working class.

A lovely pair of dining/parlour chairs, in original condition, would make a nice addition to any home.
