Rare 18th Century Ships Meat Cask (SOLD)

£2,750.00

Rare 18th Century Authentic Ships Meat Cask. A very rare thing to find one made from Chestnut, as normally these would have been made from Oak, this cask has the original iron banding, and wooden tap to the base, the base is wider, making it more stable while at sea. C1800

Before refrigeration became common food had to be preserved using salt, containers such as this pork cask were half filled with water, salt and saltpetre to keep the meat fresh. Other forms of preservation could include smoking and pickling, but these would usually be done ashore and the preserved provisions then taken aboard ship.

This wonderful piece of maritime history, this cask would make a fantastic planter or large storage, with lovely patina and still remains in original condition, it has been waxed to protect the wood and showcase the lovely grain, a really lovely thing to have in the home or as a shop display. (Base diameter 73cm)
