A Superb Victorian Brass and Steel Footman. Made from steel with a pierced brass top-plate, all set on steel legs with lion paw feet. C1890
A “footman” is a 19th-century metal stand, typically made of brass and/or steel, used to keep plates and dishes warm near an open fire before they were served. Its name comes from the belief that it took over the role of a servant (“footman”) in warming food.
A really lovely piece, wouldn’t look out of place in front of any open fireplace. (Top plate W: 38cm)
