Bamboo cabinets originated in ancient China, evolving from exclusive luxury items in the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BC) to everyday household furnishings by the Han Dynasty. The European fascination with the material began in the 19th century, sparking the Victorian and “Grandmillennial” trends of lacquered and faux-bamboo case pieces.

By the late 19th century, “Japanned” and ebonised bamboo cabinets became incredibly popular in Victorian homes, often featuring decorative lacquered panels and mirrored doors.

This impressive Victorian bamboo cabinet, would work really well as a  bookcase or display. Very good condition, structurally all in good order.
