Founded by John Cartland, who arrived in Birmingham during the Industrial Revolution, the firm was based on Loveday Street, Birmingham, before moving to Weaman Row and then Constitution Hill. They manufactured a wide range of brass products, including trivets, cabinet hardware, curtain rails, window ventilators, and door springs.
The company was famously located at the “Great Western Brass Foundry,” 68-72 Constitution Hill, and later at “Armoury Close Works,” Bordesley Green, Birmingham. The company remained in the family until shortly before it went out of business around 1954–1955.
Solid brass letter plates became popular during the Victorian era (1837-1901) because brass was durable and, when polished, suggested prosperity and high status. Victorian brass letter boxes were often heavy, cast brass, sometimes featuring ornate designs or simply marked with the word “LETTERS” in raised letters on the flap.
This letter box is in a lovely condition and should fit any standard door.
