A Stunning Victorian carved oak ‘Green Man’ hall stand. C1880

The Green Man is a widely recognised motif, typically a face composed of or surrounded by leaves, popular in medieval architecture and frequently appearing in churches. The design symbolises nature, rebirth, and spring, with early roots in Roman, Celtic, and European art. Hall stands (or “hall trees”) emerged in the early 19th century as essential Victorian furniture designed to manage guests’ coats, hats, and umbrellas in large, welcoming front entryways. Reaching their height in the 1870s-1880s, these ornate, multifunctional pieces often included mirrors, seating, and marble surfaces, serving as a key status symbol to impress visitors before they were received into the home.

This beautiful ornate hall stand, still retaining its elegance, a very solid piece and remains in original condition. Would look lovely in the hallway of a grand home or as a prop or shop piece.
