John Grinsell & Son Oak and silver plated Salts. These beautiful Salts have an Oak body, with a silver plate inside and an empty shield cartouche standing on three ball feet. Makers mark John Grinsell & Son, Birmingham, England stamped on the base in the form of Cupid. C1895
Originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne. When the partnership was dissolved in 1871 John Grinsell started a new business with his four sons (Thomas Bywater Grinsell, James Erazmus Grinsell, Lorenzo Grinsell and Joseph Charles Grinsell) known as John Grinsell & Sons. The company operated out of Victoria Works, 57 tower street St. George’s, Birmingham and they had showrooms in London and Glasgow. They made a range of silver-mounted glass and stoneware, including lock-up liquor frames, biscuit boxes, butter dishes, cups, cruet frames, flagons, and salad bowls. They registered their trademark a “Cupid standing on a scroll” in 1879. In 1905 the firm was changed to John Grinsell & Sons Ltd and was eventually purchased by Barker Ellis & Co Ltd.
These is some pitting to the inside of one of the salts, but they still remain in good condition. A great addition for any collector of John Grinsell items.
