Antique Oak Countertop Drawers

£1,250.00

Antique Oak counter top drawers. Made from Oak, with 9 graduated drawers, retaining the original brass resessed loop handles, all set on hand turned bun feet. C1880

The concept of the “countertop” storage evolved from the larger “dresser base” or “mule chest” (a chest with drawers in the base) popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, which were used in kitchens and sculleries.

Commercial Use (19th-early 20th Century): By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, smaller, purpose-built oak units appeared on shop counters for organising small goods, such as thread, haberdashery, or, as seen in specific examples, chocolate, tea, or stationery.

Antique oak countertop drawers, often appearing as small cabinets, organisers, or miniature chests, have a rich history originating from a need for organised, accessible storage on working surfaces, particularly in shops, offices, and kitchens during the 18th to early 20th centuries. These pieces, crafted from durable oak, served functional roles before becoming decorative, collectible, or repurposed items.

These drawers remain in original condition, with lovely patina to the grain, with some signs of use to the top, but this does not take away how lovely theses drawers are, would make a great addition to any home.
