Victorian tambour-fronted plan chests are highly functional, space-saving storage units, often featuring rolling wooden slat doors that conceal banks of shallow drawers, ideal for artists, architects, or collectors. These antique pieces typically date from the late 19th century and are renowned for their high-quality craftsmanship, often constructed from oak, mahogany, or walnut.

The Waring family reputedly originated in Norway and emigrated to Ireland at the beginning of the nineteenth century where they became successful linen manufacturers in Belfast. John Waring or his son, Samuel James Waring, opened a branch in Liverpool in 1835 and became wholesale cabinet makers. In 1871 S. J. Waring, cabinet maker, employed twelve men and four boys. The firm was listed as cabinet makers at 42, 45, 47, 49 & 53 St Anne Street & 2-6 Harker Place, Liverpool (1881) and Bold Street & St Anne Street, Liverpool (1883).

Samuel James Waring rapidly expanded the business during the 1880s, furnishing hotels and public buildings throughout Europe. He also founded Waring-White Building Company which built the Liverpool Corn Exchange, Selfridge’s department store and the Ritz Hotel and from 1898 also furnished the Carlton Hotel salons.

This plans chest is in good condition and still in full working order, unfortunately, the key is missing, but this does not take away how lovely this piece is, would fit into any new or period home.
