Antique Victorian Midsized Rocking Horse (SOLD)

£800.00

A charming Victorian Period painted rocking horse, the body realistically modelled, raised on runners and set upon a painted base, with its original aged patina validating the age of the piece.

While historically the toy was reserved for nobility, due to its laborious, elaborate and hence costly manufacturing process, antique examples, such as this, are rare and make for one of the most charming heirlooms; not least due to their enormous decorative qualities, handmade finishes and individual character.

Though versions of the toy horse appeared as early as 400BC in Greece and Persia, it was not until the 17th century that the rocking horse, as we know it today, was firmly established in Europe.

This rocking horse glides on swing arms referred to as a ‘safety stand’, requiring not only less space than the so called ‘bow rocker’, but proving a robust and safer ride.
